Say Hello to Michael Giordano, Our Wallpaper Hanging Guru

There are a lot of things one should be aware of when hiring and working with a wallpaper hanger. Be aware of what the costs are, prepping for the wall, and what can go wrong. Greetings, I am Michael Giordano, wallpaper hanger for about three and a half decades, and I will be sharing wallpaper mishaps to avoid with tips and advice. Watching trends come and go in the wonderful world of paperhanging, and I am always finding new ways to improve my skills.

Let’s get to it. The first thing you need to do is choose an installer. You definitely want a knowledgeable professional. So where do you find a reputable, trustworthy installer? Showrooms may have a few suggestions and referrals from fellow interior designers or colleagues are another source. Ask lots of questions, and if you get a recommendation from a reliable source, you are heading in the right direction.

The material is one of the most important things to pay attention to, and paperhangers are aware of the issues associated with each type of material. Whether you’re in the business a while or just starting out, please understand that some things are doable, and some things are just not possible! I know you think we are magicians, but we do the best we can. Some seams DO show depending on the material you are using but a good installer will think through where the seams fall on the wall and do our best to minimize making them less obvious, when possible. A good installer will also recognize color variations in natural materials and work with the natural light in a room to give it a cohesive look. Professional installers know - hang 3 strips and stop and look. They don’t hang the entire room and then tell you there is a problem. Wallcovering materials are an investment, whether it costs $20.00 a yard or $500.00 a yard, you know this a worthwhile expense as wallcovering gives a room a completely different dimension, so you want to be careul who is handling this delicate purchase.

One of the best ways to keep cost down is getting the proper measurements of the space and the specifics of the paper. The right installer understands how to measure to eliminate over ordering and when extra paper is necessary. Showroom salespeople will help you as much as they can, providing you the specifics of the paper but it is essential to confer with your paper hanger, so no detail is overlooked. Remember, you have windows, doors, and closets, so ask an installer for estimates since they are often complimentary. Get your measurements, pricing, and timeline all at once from your installer. On the job site, ask your installer what prep you might need – some papers require wall liners, or specific primers, recommended for a reason. Educate yourself by reviewing the wallcovering installation directions on the material yourself and gain knowledge to save time and money, don’t cut corners, that will always end up with costly mistakes.

If you have any questions or your installer needs to ask a question, I work with many of your favorite showrooms and I am available for you, just ask and I will lead you in the right direction! “Best In Show Wallpaper from Osborne and Little”
